Notes on fabric

Jacquard is a woven fabric in which patterns are created directly within the structure of the fabric rather than printed onto its surface. The technique can produce intricate floral, geometric or abstract motifs, with the pattern often visible from both sides in different forms. Jacquard fabrics can be smooth or highly textured and can vary considerably in weight and drape depending on the yarns and construction used. The name comes from Joseph-Marie Jacquard, whose early nineteenth-century loom made it possible to control individual warp threads and automate the production of complex woven patterns. His invention transformed textile production by making elaborate designs much easier to reproduce than with earlier hand-operated weaving methods.
